Dulux makes colour selection easy

Dulux makes colour selection for your home renovation project easier with the release of Kiwi's favourite hues for their homes

For many people, selecting colours for their home can be overwhelming.

“Choosing new colours for your home renovation should be an enjoyable experience, but for many it’s a nightmare. With hundreds of paint colours out there, many people feel completely overwhelmed by the options available to them,” says Gretchen Flynn, colour expert at Dulux New Zealand.

Thankfully, leading New Zealand paint manufacturer Dulux has the answer, with the company releasing their top twenty most popular interior and exterior paint colours* - the tried and true colours that Kiwis turn to again and again from the 900 colours available in the company’s unique Colours of New Zealand range.

“We’ve found that there are a lot of people out there who are a bit insecure when it comes to selecting new colours for their home. With this in mind we decided to create a collection of our twenty most popular interior and exterior colours - the colours that New Zealanders themselves love and trust - to help people feel more confident in their colour selection,” says Renay Robertson, Marketing Manager at Dulux New Zealand.

So what colours do people throughout the nation rely on again and again for their beloved walls?

Well, despite vibrant hues gaining in popularity, it turns out that Kiwis love affair with white is unabated, with the shade dominating the Dulux most popular interior colours list.

“White has such broad acceptance and appeal, and can be used in just about any style home and in any room,” says Flynn.

“A lot of people see white as being boring and bland but it’s anything but. There’s so many shades of white available, making it an incredibly versatile colour. Plus, the beauty of using white in the home is that you can team it with brighter accents and accessories to create an individual and schemed look.”

Flynn says while it doesn’t come as a shock that white has taken out the vast majority of the top interior colour spots, what is surprising is the shades of white that New Zealanders favour.

“New Zealanders tastes in white have definitely changed,” says Flynn. “Whereas traditionally you would have seen creamy, yellow whites or whites with pink undertones dominating, greyed off whites such as our number one colour, Mt Aspiring, and whites with beige undertones are now much more popular.”

Flynn says the shift towards grey toned whites reflects the international trend for having clean and graphic interiors.

“Grey toned whites tend to work better with this look, as opposed to yellow neutrals, which tend to be quite warm and soft.”

If the Dulux twenty most popular exterior colours list is anything to go by, Kiwis are a tad more adventurous with colour on the outside of their homes, with the most popular shades being strong neutrals such as slates, greys, frosty blue-greens, taupes and beiges.

“The colours are all strong, but they are also very natural” says Flynn of the top 20 exterior colours.

“Just like the top interior hues, these colours are all very versatile, which would explain why they’re New Zealanders favourites. They work well on just about any style home – from 1920 weatherboard bungalows right through to ultra modern, architecturally designed houses.”

Slates and greys, which are huge internationally, feature most prominently on the most popular exterior renovation colours list, something which Flynn says can not only be attributed to overseas trends but also to the fact that the colour works amazingly well in New Zealand’s unique environment.

“We have very unique light in New Zealand, and a diverse environment. Our greys, just like all the other colours in the Dulux Colours of New Zealand range, are inspired by the colours that you see in New Zealand’s natural environment, so they work beautifully on Kiwi homes.”

To celebrate the release of New Zealanders favourite hues, Dulux has created special ‘Dulux Popular Interior Colours’ and ‘Dulux Popular Exterior Colours’ palette cards, which are available nationwide though all paint and hardware retailers.
