The COVID years saw many homeowners reassess their living quarters, visualising what their house could look like if they undertook a grand makeover. This was certainly the case for Jane, an Auckland homeowner who not only imagined what her Point Chevalier house could look like, but turned her renovation dreams into reality with help from Refresh Renovations.

Reaching out to Auckland Central Renovation Consultant, Saleem Bhikoo during COVID, Jane re-established contact 18 months later to proceed with her renovation plans.

A Bungalow with Potential

Jane’s home was a busy household. Living and working from home meant any renovation needed to accommodate the needs of a busy family. Jane wanted to remodel and upgrade the home’s main entry and downstairs floor plan to include a master bedroom, built-in wardrobe, private office space, heating and air conditioning, and a modern laundry.

Following Refresh Renovations’ unique five-step process, Saleem and his team took Jane’s renovation requirements from concept design to completion.

Designed to Extend

Key to the success of this bungalow renovation was flow. Saleem’s concept plans included the remodel and upgrade to the entry of the home along with the downstairs floor plan, creating a new central hallway that seamlessly connected the front and rear of the house. These plans saw the complete transformation of the home’s ground floor, an area approximately 100m2 in size.

Conscious of the age of the downstairs of the house (c. 1920s), Saleem and his team anticipated some remedial work may be required. When pricing up the renovation, Saleem provided a quote plus an indicative contingency allowance to be budgeted for unexpected remedial work.

Adding to the abode

With Jane and her family living and working from home, any opportunity to create space was not to be missed. Saleem’s concept plans enabled the creation of an extension for a private office space with heating and air conditioning. An abundance of natural light has made this a productive workspace, suitable all year round.

Further functional upgrades included the addition of a modern laundry, with plenty of bench space, storage space, and room for both a washer and dryer… exactly what Jane needed to meet the needs of her busy family. Building consent was required for both the laundry and the bathroom, but as part of the Refresh process and complete project management delivered by Saleem, this was applied for and received to keep the renovation on track.

Saleem also ensured continuity of design throughout the renovation with the use of new timber and aluminium joinery, solid oak flooring, sensor lifting, and large format deck / steps in Vitex (hardwood), which ensured a quality finish and feel.

A touch of luxury

The real element of beauty brought to this bungalow was the luxurious master bedroom suite, complete with wall-to-wall, custom-made, built-in wardrobes, and a stylish ensuite. Floor to ceiling tiles created a beautiful modern look in the ensuite, while the walk-in shower with black rims added a touch of class. The floating vanity helped to create the illusion of space, while a back lit mirror and above vanity basin were finishing touches with flair.

The only real challenge of the renovation was the shortage of building materials along with delivery delays. However, Saleem’s trusted relationships with suppliers, something he’s worked on over many years, paid dividends and ensured the renovation was never extensively delayed.

All of the planning, project management, and communication was worth it as Jane and her family are thrilled with her newly renovated home. “Saleem and the team did fantastic work at our place”.
