This 1920s Brooklyn bungalow had a dated bathroom in disrepair that wasn’t family friendly. A top-to-toe renovation incorporating modern design and a beautiful, tiled finish transformed the space into a luxurious oasis of calm.

Designer Needed!

Jason’s character bungalow was nestled in the sought-after suburb of Brooklyn, Wellington. But while the location of the home was family friendly, the bathroom inside was anything but. In poor condition, the space had an odd layout and featured a rather questionable blue bath! Jason wanted a complete renovation and was looking for a designer that could take care of all the details, including draughting and the necessary council consent. He contacted his local Refresh Renovations Consultant, Jenelle Winstanley, who arranged a free meeting to discuss his renovation goals and explain how Refresh could help keep the project straightforward and stress-free.

When you work with Refresh, you’re working with a company that has global experience combined with local knowledge. Your consultant is with you every step of the way, so communication is always straightforward, and no work begins until you’re completely happy with the detailed working plans and budget. Jenelle’s expertise and end-to-end project management was exactly what Jason was after, so the pair got to work creating the perfect family bathroom.

Concept and Design

Jason’s existing bathroom had a bath, shower, and vanity but the toilet (the only one for the whole family) was separate, so including a second toilet in the main bathroom was high on the priority list.

Jenelle’s designer delivered a beautiful concept that included floor to ceiling tiles, a frameless glass shower, and beautiful modern fixtures. The character French window would drench the room in natural light and become a beautiful feature in the space.

Jason’s renovation would be a balance between investing in high end details and features to give the bathroom a luxurious feel and being mindful of the budget where possible. For example, Jason decided to prioritise a tiled shower which is more expensive than acrylic, but ultimately delivers a beautiful finish that creates a luxury feel. He also invested in a custom vanity but, as a trade off, chose a more entry level shower. Jenelle was on hand to help him through each decision to ensure the design worked for his taste and budget.

Demolition and Build

With the design approved, the demolition team moved in, and it was time to say goodbye to the bright blue bath, old flooring, and even the walls. All the floor joists were adjusted, new electrical and plumbing lines were laid, and the walls were insulated and relined.

Sourcing reliable tradespeople and managing an on-site schedule is often extremely time consuming for homeowners, but with Jenelle at the helm, Jason could sit back, relax, and watch the exciting transformation unfold. Jenelle tapped into her existing network of professionals and suppliers and pulled together an outstanding renovation team including a glazier, painter, plumber, tiler, builder and more. She also managed the entire council consent process on Jason’s behalf and kept him up to date every step of the way.

Understated Elegance

Jason’s new bathroom is a calming oasis for a busy family, with quality fixtures and fittings that create a luxurious feel. The decision to invest in floor to ceiling tiles across one wall paid off as the room not only looks stunning, but is an easy care and easy clean surface, perfect for a busy family. It also allowed for a modern wet room design. Stylish tiled niches above the toilet and in the shower take the look to the next level.

The floor and shower wall tile in grey contrast beautifully with the adjacent white walls, as well as the modern tub and character French window, also framed in white. There was a delay with the custom vanity, but the wait was worth it as the white vessel top is a stunning feature, and the subtle curves are echoed in both the back to wall toilet and the free-standing bath. A recessed mirror and wall mounted tapware complete the luxury look.

Final Words

Jenelle delivered a stunning bathroom transformation that is exactly what Jason wanted for his family. From a practical walk-in shower and second toilet to luxurious tile and a custom vanity, every detail combines to create the perfect bathroom that exudes elegance and calm. Modern fixtures combine effortlessly with the character French window feature, to create a contemporary bathroom that honours the home’s heritage. Jenelle is thrilled with the results. “The renovation is amazing. The tiling is smart and sophisticated, and the neutral palette has created a light, bright, and spacious feel.”

Suppliers used in this project were sourced from Refresh’s preferred partners; GIB, Mitre10, Placemakers, Resene, Robertson and Tile Depot.
