Renovating even a single bathroom can feel like a daunting task, so when Lyn had two bathrooms, a toilet, and a laundry all in need of a makeover, it was understandable that she wanted some expert guidance.

Lyn contacted her local Manawatu Refresh team and arranged a free consultation with Renovation Consultant Richard Marshall to discuss her renovation needs. She explained to Richard that the spaces were dated and hadn’t been touched since the 1990s; there was also an issue with leaks in the upstairs bathroom. Lyn’s daughter was living in the house, and she wanted to make changes to modernise, lighten, and brighten the spaces.

Richard walked Lyn through the Refresh approach, and explained how it transforms the often-stressful renovating experience into a simple and straightforward process. Richard would expertly manage every element of the project and tailor the design, budget, and timeline to suit Lyn’s needs. An end-to-end service sounded perfect to Lyn, so she welcomed Richard onboard, and the pair began the exciting task of designing her new bathrooms.

Concept design

Lyn wanted a total refresh of all the bathroom spaces plus the laundry and loved the idea of a modern black and white concept. The spaces needed to feel fresh and bright, and even though there were four separate spaces to tackle, they needed to have a sense of cohesion.

Richard’s designer suggested a complete demolition of the existing spaces, which would allow them to not only address the leaks in the upstairs bathroom, but also have a blank canvas to create the beautifully modern bathrooms and laundry that Lyn envisioned. Both bathrooms would have the space for separate baths and showers and would feature contemporary fixtures with lots of straight lines and angles. The master bathroom would also boast a stunning walk-in tiled shower. The single toilet and the laundry would receive a similar modern treatment, with washer and dryer set beneath a handy benchtop and sink.

While the spacious design and modern fixtures would transform the spaces, Lyn’s choice of floor tile would make the biggest impact on how the spaces would look. Boldly patterned black and white tile used across all four spaces would create cohesion through the house and provide a definite ‘wow’ factor.

Renovation Underway

Once Lyn was completely happy with the detailed plans and costings, project manager Zoe Blease and her team moved forward with the exciting renovation and Lyn could finally say goodbye to the dated Nineties design and décor. Because Lyn’s daughter would be living in the house throughout the project, it was important to keep one bathroom always working, so Zoe divided the renovation into two parts to suit their needs.

Zoe utilised her existing network of local professionals and suppliers to find the right people for Lyn’s renovation, and expertly managed every detail of the project, including the all-important on-site scheduling. Over several months Zoe’s team completely stripped the spaces and replaced it with new flooring, Gib, paint, lighting, plumbing, and of course fixtures. Lyn was kept up to date every step of the way and could also check progress via the online customer portal.

Monochrome Magic

From naff ‘nineties to monochrome magic – Lyn’s new bathroom and laundry spaces are light, bright, and visually striking. The hard lines and modern edges are softened by the playful tile along with round, backlit feature mirrors. Even the existing window with black lines and framing adds to the monochrome theme.

The master shower is a stunning showpiece, featuring walk in tile, built in ledges, and recessed niches. The back-to-wall toilets and downlighting add to the simple, modern aesthetic.

Real Wow Factor

Zoe listened to Lyn’s renovation goals and delivered modern bathrooms and a laundry room that are bright and contemporary. The use of playful patterned tile ensured that the black and white theme never became clinical, while also providing contrast to the many straight lines and edges of the modern showers, tubs, and vanities.

Zoe is thrilled with the outcome. “The bathrooms and laundry were all in original condition, so the renovation has really modernised the spaces and made them much lighter and brighter. Plus, the amazing tile provides a real wow factor”.
