Help needed to realise a vision

Marilize loved living in Titirangi, in an idyllic location and within a closely-knit community, but it was time to make some changes to her 1990s home to better reflect her lifestyle and personality. This would be no ordinary makeover. Marilize had a clear vision of what she wanted the renovation to achieve and was prepared to take her time to find exactly the right concept, design, and products to suit. She wanted both ‘behind the scenes’ alterations such as new plumbing, electricals, and GIB, and significant aesthetic changes including window and door changes, fireplace installation, kitchen overhaul and more.

Needing help to realise her dream and manage the process, she contacted her local West Auckland Renovation Consultant Morag Burns to see if she was the right fit for the project. Morag arranged a free consultation to see the property and understand Marilize’s renovation goals, and to share more about what Refresh could offer.

A customised concept

Refresh focuses on offering a bespoke service and customising any renovation, regardless of size, to the homeowner’s needs. This flexibility and attention to detail was exactly what Marilize was looking for. She needed time to work through the concept, and she wanted the renovation to be design focused within her budget. Morag assured her that she would take care of every detail of the project to ensure it was as straightforward and stress-free as possible, but that she would have control over the renovation, which suited her wish to be fully involved throughout.

The concept stage took several months as Marilize reworked and refined the plans until they were exactly what she wanted. At the end of the process, Morag's design team had a plan that included everything from environmentally-friendly cork tiling and custom wallpaper to new doors allowing seamless indoor-outdoor flow for entertaining and pizza parties! The design would also see the family room and kitchen swap spaces to provide a more spacious kitchen and better interaction.

Transformation underway

Once the working plans and detailed costings were finalised and approved by Marilize, Morag's team could begin the transformation. Morag used her existing network to contract an extensive range of professionals including tilers, floorers, gib stoppers, painters, electricians, plumbers, builders, an aluminium joinery manufacturer, and more! As the project manager, Morag managed every element of the renovation including the council consent process for an additional guest toilet build.

Marilize decided to install the new kitchen independently using readymade options to save costs, freeing up her budget for the custom elements she was passionate about. Meanwhile, Morag’s team was busy changing windows and doors, completely renovating the family bathroom and en suite, laying flooring, and updating old electrical and plumbing lines.

New cork flooring required installation, sanding, and varnishing and was a huge investment in time, but for Marilize it was worth it for the warmth, durability, and sustainable outcome.

Personality Plus

Morag’s team delivered a stunning renovation perfectly tailored to Marlize’s vision and budget. The new kitchen and dining design was transformational, creating a large, open concept with gorgeous stacking doors leading to the deck, a seamless extension of living space perfect for entertaining. Patterned wallpaper, a French style pot rack, and feature lighting add to the creative design aesthetic.

Both bathrooms have distinct personalities, with the family suite kept light and bright with feature white vertical tile to create visual interest. The en suite bathroom is bold and blue, with painted wood panelling on the bottom half of the room and flamboyant wallpaper above. A single guest toilet was also installed, again using a feature wallpaper that injects style and flair into the space.

Final Thoughts

Marilize’s attention to detail and unwavering commitment to the project resulted in a phenomenal renovation that has transformed the home into a special space full of personality. The house feels warm and inviting, exactly what Marilize had envisioned from the start. Morag is thrilled with the outcome.

“The results of the renovation are fabulous, and there is such a rich aesthetic that really reflects Marilize. Swapping the kitchen and living spaces allowed us to create a functional flow that has really benefited the home.”
