Kitchen Renovation Cost Guide 2026: What Auckland Homeowners Are Actually Spending

We sat down with Saleem Bhikoo from Refresh Renovations Auckland Central to talk about what he's seeing in the kitchen renovation market in 2026. From entry-level refreshes to full top-end builds, here's a frank look at the numbers.

Saleem, you're across a lot of kitchen projects. What's the first thing to understand when people start thinking about cost?

Every kitchen is different, and people come to this process with different visions of what their ideal space looks like. Two kitchens can share the same footprint and feel completely different, because the materials, cabinetry quality, and scope of work are tailored to what each homeowner actually wants. The budget ranges I use are a starting point for a real conversation, not a fixed quote.

Being clear about your budget upfront is a good thing. It means we can build something great within it, and the whole process runs more smoothly from there. I work with each client as their single point of contact throughout the entire project, so the earlier we're aligned, the better the outcome.

So walk us through the tiers. What does an entry-level kitchen look like in 2026?

Entry level starts from around $40,000. This is where a lot of people are surprised by what's possible. The cabinetry is still custom-built and bespoke to your space, designed around your layout and your needs, just working within tighter material and specification parameters. Working within the existing footprint keeps costs down and still delivers a great result. You're looking at a solid benchtop, minimal changes to the electrical and plumbing, and a cosmetic refresh: new splashback, paint, décor.

Appliances are separate as there's a wide variety to choose from, but we'll guide you through what's right for your kitchen.

If you've got a solid layout already and just want it to look better and function more cleanly, this is a great option. Final costs depend on layout and specification of finish.*

What about the mid-range?

Mid-range starts at $60,000 and up, and this is where things start to get really interesting. You move to quality custom-built cabinetry that's made to fit your space exactly. The material options open up significantly. You can have durable, high-quality benchtops, proper hardware, and finishes that will hold up for years.

You can make changes to electrical and plumbing without major structural work, so there's more flexibility to improve function. Clever storage becomes part of the picture, including pull-outs and drawer systems that make the kitchen work better day to day. 

Professional design is built in here as well, and I manage the whole project personally from concept through to completion.

And the top end?

$90,000 and above. This is a completely bespoke kitchen. Bespoke cabinetry, luxury countertops, new plumbing and electrical layouts, structural changes if needed. Hardwood flooring or ceramic tiles, high-end appliances, ambient lighting, even entertainment systems. You're building your dream kitchen from the ground up.

Can you walk us through how the process actually works once someone decides to go ahead?

The Refresh process runs through five stages, and we’re with you at every one of them.

It starts with an initial consultation, where we talk through what you want to achieve and I get a clear picture of your goals, your lifestyle, and your budget. From there we move into scoping and feasibility, where an architectural concept is drawn up so you can see whether your ideas are feasible and make any changes before work begins.

Then comes detailed planning and costing. Working drawings are developed, all the engineering, structural, and design decisions are locked in, and I present you with a fixed quote and a contract. No surprises.

The build stage is where your kitchen comes to life. I manage every aspect of it for you, coordinating all the trades and keeping everything on schedule so you can get on with your everyday life. The final stage is project completion, where all council documentation is sorted and you receive your Code of Compliance documentation.

You have one person looking after everything. That's how Refresh works, and it's the main reason our projects come in on time and on budget.

What's the advice for someone trying to get the most out of their budget?

Focus on what actually matters to you. Everyone has different priorities. Some people want incredible appliances, others care more about storage, others want the visual impact of a beautiful benchtop. Know your non-negotiables and be willing to compromise on the rest.

Mixing premium and cost-effective materials is also a smart approach. You don't need luxury everything. Put the money into what you'll see and touch every day, and be more practical elsewhere.

And lean on professional project management. Renovations that go wrong typically waste around 30% of the budget, split roughly between poor planning and lack of project management. That's a real figure from BRANZ research. A well-run project with proper coordination will save you money, not cost you more.
