The Initial Consultation

In the harbourside suburb of Beach Haven, Nicky and Dean live in their 1970s A-frame home. While the property was full of charm, a few less-loved characteristics of the 70s remained and had become more noticeable over time – namely, the lack of large windows.
Nicky and Dean wanted to bring in more natural lighting, upgrade the home’s interiors with a stylish design, and build a second-storey deck. However, they were reluctant to renovate by themselves due to the complexities of such a large-scale project.
"We had been considering renovating our home for a number of years but had always been reluctant to start given the inevitable complexities of the process and the potential pitfalls of project managing something so significant ourselves” - Nicky and Dean, the homeowners.
For expert assistance, they contacted local Renovation Partner Saleem Bhikoo to take on the project and bring their vision to life.

Project Costing

The initial scope of this renovation was substantial, and while Nicky and Dean were determined to create the home of their dreams, they were also mindful of their budget.
Saleem worked to reduce the scope of the project without compromising the result. Nicky and Dean had bold ideas for their design, but Saleem’s project management skills were key for bringing them to life.
After finalising the design concepts, Saleem presented the homeowners with a costing estimate more fitting of their budget, with the final project cost coming in at $295,000.

Construction

After obtaining council consent to build the second-storey deck and additional joinery, the build phase was carried out over three months and completed just in time for Christmas.
Saleem’s team of tradespeople included builders, tilers, plumbers, painters – it was a specialist crew. And as for building materials, supplies were sourced from Gib, Placemakers, Resene, Reece, and Noel Leeming
A significant part of the construction process involved building the second-storey deck, which was constructed on a slope that required excavation work. Deep foundational holes were dug for the timber posts to ensure the deck was structurally sound. The decking was then connected to the second floor’s main living area via bi-fold doors, allowing for a blissful alfresco vibe — exactly what Nicky and Dean were after.
Meanwhile, the main house received extensive upgrades throughout. Changes included fully repainting the exterior, installing larger windows and a skylight, laying down new timber flooring, creating open-plan living, renovating the kitchen, and refitting the ensuite.

Making a Statement in The Kitchen

A dark blue and white colour scheme accented with brass runs throughout the house – though it makes a particular statement in the kitchen.
The lower cabinets are painted in a rich blue colour by Resene called ‘Indian Ink’ and paired with overhead cabinets in a timeless white. Brass handles and tapware further complement the colour scheme, tying the space together.
With so much storage, there’s plenty of room to conceal clutter, leaving the polished engineered stone benchtops clear and spacious. Even the fridge is hidden away in the cabinetry. But the most endearing and clever spot in the kitchen has to be the drinks bar, a little nook for preparing tea, coffee, or wine, with open shelving, a built-in chiller, and feature lighting.

An Enchanting Ensuite

Nicky and Dean’s ensuite is a dreamy continuation of the kitchen’s design, with a bit of Parisian flair, featuring the same satin brushed brass hardware and clean look.
Beautiful blue and white patterned tiles cover the floor and pair beautifully with the shower’s reflective white tiling. All the while, modern shiplap panelling creates a coastal feel that’s resemblant to Hamptons interior style.

Elevated Exteriors

The new second-storey deck has entirely expanded the home’s living area and established an idyllic space for outdoor living. But that’s not the only external improvement that’s made a significant impact.
The elegant combination of bold blue and crisp white has been used again for the exterior repaint and ties in superbly with the lush green surroundings. However, the front door was unexpectedly painted with a different colour –  charming ‘Pink Lace’ by Resene. The soft pink combines neatly with the dark blue and creates an inviting entrance to the home as well as a memorable way to leave.

Final Thoughts

Nicky and Dean are thrilled with their home’s renovation, their favourite aspect being the elevated deck. As the biggest structural addition, the deck has completely changed the way the owners use their home.
Attributing the success of the renovation to Saleem, they’ve also noted, “Our decision to engage Saleem and his team was the best choice we could have made. From the first design meeting - through planning, costings, consenting and then the actual build process - the communications, level of engagement and renovations were exemplary.”
