This home renovation project began with an unlikely meeting. Perth Renovation Specialists Jason and Michelle Zielinski originally met this client when they sold her an old cast iron pedestal sink that had been salvaged from a previous project. The client then called two weeks later, asking if Jason and Michelle could renovate the bathroom that the pedestal sink had been purchased for.
Jason and Michelle met with the client to gain a deeper understanding of her project. The main priorities were to update the existing bathroom so that it would be more practical for the client’s elderly mother to use. The client wanted the pedestal sink to be the central feature of a new art/deco, country style interior design. She also wanted to make the layout and bathroom ware mobility-friendly. The new bathroom needed to be ready by the time the client’s mother returned home from the hospital and also needed to be carried out while the homeowner was living in the United States. Refresh’s project management process combined with its online customer portal provided an ideal solution. Throughout the design stage, Jason and Michelle corresponded with the homeowner by email and in video meetings.
“Due to her being overseas, we were entrusted to put together selections for her to choose from”, explains Jason. “It was such a fun project. Searching through salvage yards and looking at patterned tile options... it definitely allowed for the release of some creativity!”
Jason and Michelle also visited the client’s mother in hospital to keep her involved in the design process. During this time, they also spoke with an occupational therapist to ensure that they had the appropriate measurements for the bathroom’s new support rails and to gain any further insight into how they could incorporate the client’s mother’s needs into the bathroom design. Once they were aware of all of the project’s considerations, they presented the client with a few design options. The client selected a design, Jason's team priced it up and the renovation began.
Jason’s team managed experienced local tradespeople as they waterproofed the bathroom, carried out plumbing work and began restoring and installing the salvaged products. This included the pedestal sink, a window and a sliding barn-style lavatory door.
“We had resurfaced the pedestal sink from pastel yellow to white, to work in with the colour scheme”, explains Jason. “The other two items were stripped back and refinished. The lavatory door, in particular, maintained remanence of the original paint to achieve a rustic look.”
Unique, art-deco tiles were installed, along with newly designed cabinets, plumbing fixtures and a glazed, walk-in shower.
“Given the size of the room, we designed a bespoke vanity with a timber benchtop that tied in with the window frame, lavatory door and shower seat”, says Jason. “We also included a panelled finish to the vanity drawers, to work with the aesthetic.”
The project was completed within seven weeks - making the bathroom a completely new space from its former design. The farm-style door adds so much character and the other restored items add to the homely feel of the bathroom. The walk-in shower makes the layout highly practical and the tiling gives the space a final dose of personality.
Happy with the result, Jason and Michelle’s client has since asked them back to discuss a second home renovation project.
