This 1990s Christchurch bungalow belonged to a first homeowner who was keen to modernise the property and put her stamp on things. The bleak bathroom was first on the docket and received an outstanding revamp.

Dated, Damp, and Damaged

A proud first-time homeowner of a modest Christchurch bungalow, Rebekah was ready to renovate and make the place her own. The bathroom in particular needed an overhaul; dated, damp, and damaged, it required not only a style renovation but remedial work on one of the walls previously damaged by a leak.

Needing advice, Rebekah contacted her local Refresh Renovations Consultant Tom Kettell to arrange a free consultation. Tom was only too happy to help and met with Rebekah at her home so that he could see the space in person, listen to Rebekah’s renovation goals, and explain more about the Refresh process.

Refresh offer a custom service so that every renovation is tailored to each client’s needs, lifestyle, and budget. We have completed thousands of successful renovations globally, and deliver exceptional customer service and full project management with each renovation. This sounded like the perfect process to Rebekah so she set her budget, and Tom got to work creating a bespoke bathroom concept.

Designing to Budget

Rebekah wanted a sleek, modern look with high-end touches – without the high-end price tag! A full demolition needed to be budgeted for, as well as new GIB, ventilation, and paint and plaster work on the adjoining bedroom wall that had suffered water damage. The bathroom was large, so there was room for a separate bath and shower, heated towel rails, and a large mirror with LED lighting.

Rebekah worked with Tom’s design team to choose fixtures, fittings, and finishes. While she initially had her eye on the high-end product range, this would have taken her over budget, so the supply team were able to source similar, more cost-effective products that allowed the same look within the target price range. Similarly, the choice to include half-height tiled walls gave the luxe look without the cost of going all the way up to the ceiling.

Transformation Begins

Bathrooms may be small spaces, but full renovations always require a raft of tradespeople –  from tilers, plasterers, and painters, to electricians, plumbers, and flooring specialists. Trying to source so many tradespeople – let alone manage a complicated schedule – can be a real headache for homeowners attempting a renovation, but not with Refresh. Tom tapped into his existing network of trusted professionals and seamlessly managed Rebekah’s renovation from design through to final delivery.

The renovation required a full demolition of the existing bathroom, mould treatment on timber, and then relining with aquiline GIB to remedy the water damage on one of the walls. Ventilation and insulation were installed before plastering and painting provided a fresh slate for new modern fittings.

The install team ran into a hiccup when the shower tray did not work with the height of the existing waste pipe, but this was remedied with some skilful adjustments that did not affect the final look. The shower door also went AWOL during delivery, but Tom’s supplier had a new one shipped within a week. Tom’s relationship with his partners at the Flooring Centre also meant that they juggled their schedule when the flooring preparation required extra time and attention. While this would have been a major headache for Rebekah on her own, Tom took care of it all – one of the many benefits of having a dedicated Refresh project manager.

A Beautiful Makeover

Tom’s team took Rebekah’s dated and damaged bathroom and transformed it into a sleek and stylish space that she absolutely loves. The neutral colour scheme feels calm and serene, while the timber-look vinyl plank flooring gives a warm finish. The tiled shower is complemented by premium, frameless glass, and the back-to-wall freestanding bath offers a touch of indulgence. A custom wall hung vanity with vessel top sink, LED backlit mirror, brushed nickel fixtures, and heated towel bars all contribute to the modern, designer feel while reflecting Rebekah’s tastes and style.

Both Rebekah and Tom are thrilled with the renovation result. “The change has been transformative,” says Tom. “The custom vanity, tiled shower, and heated towel bars all give the bathroom a luxurious feel. It’s a stunning space and we love the outcome.”
