A functional update for a compact apartment bathroom with a focus on increasing functionality and feeling of spaciousness.
This live in apartment owner wanted an update for her bathroom, the old shower was starting to leak, and the small bathroom/laundry wasn't functioning well for her and her son. She reached out to KathleenMagon of Refresh Renovations for help. The client had a clear vision of the practicality that she wanted from her space and the overall look that she wanted to achieve but needed help translating these goals into an actionable renovation plan.
Major Challenges
The biggest challenge for this renovation was access to the site. Needing to traverse two flights of stairs for the demolition and fit out added an extra challenge for our trade team. However, this was easily solved by adding in extra hands when heavy lifting was needed.
Design Highlights
Removing the divider wall from the washing machine helps open up the space and makes it feel bigger without being so closed in. Also moving the storage from wall shelving into the vanity opens the way for a large mirror which also helps the room feel larger than it is. The slimline vanity is paired with a full-sized basin. This configuration allows for a combination of storage and functionality while still being “right-sized” for the proportions of theroom. The colour palette was kept very neutral with warm whites and grey contrasts with the timber look vanity to introduce a needed warmth into the space.
Project Execution
The renovation was completed in just over 5 weeks, the timeframe was slightly longer than expected due to extra drying times needed over the winter period during the plastering and painting stage. There was also a small issue with some minor damage to the mirror that needed to be replaced. The original budget was $44,126. There was a minor over run of just under $1000 for replacement of unsafe electrical cables and some remediation works for the floor underneath the old shower.
With careful planning and execution, Kathleen Magon and herteam of Refresh Renovations® were able to keep a tight control on the project budget delivered a modern minimalist bathroom that is more spacious and enjoyable to use.
Client Feedback
This homeowner was detail driven and wanted everything to be completed to the highest standards. She appreciated that the Refresh team made every effort to complete the project just has she had envisioned.

Final Finishes and Touches
A clean linear look was crucial for this design. By aligning the large mirror to the length of the vanity and adding a splashback of minisubway tiles. It helps elongate and open up the space. The combination of drawer and door storage in the vanity serves to reduce the vertical clutter from the original space. The solid surface vanity top and rimless toilet ensure that these new fixtures not only look great but are easy to keep clean too.
