Having worked with Refresh Renovations Wellington before, Helen and her husband knew exactly who to call when they decided it was time for a bathroom renovation. The couple wanted to live out their retirement in their 1950s Wellington unit but a major makeover was needed. Renovation Consultant Lia Boersma was ready to help.

The bathroom required a full renovation. Helen could no longer step into and out of the bath/shower, so a full shower was a priority for safety reasons. It was also important to maximise the space in the bathroom and increase light levels. In addition, Helen wanted to redecorate the two upstairs bedrooms with new paint, flooring, and joinery. Water damage from roof leaks between Helen’s unit and her neighbour’s needed fixing and the roof itself repaired and cleaned.

In-depth and in stride

Following their initial consultation and discussions, Helen and her husband were thrilled with the concept that Lia’s design consultant, Tina Daisley, presented. The bathroom was set to be transformed with a beautiful, fresh palette and light galore. The initial budget for the bathroom and bedrooms was estimated at $150,000 but was extended to $170,000 once it became apparent how extensive the water damage was. The rot repairs included roofing repairs between the two units, and a clean, repair, and waterproof of the existing roof. Helen was focused on an outcome rather than costs and just wanted it all sorted, once and for all. Knowing Lia and her team could be trusted to deliver on time, budget, and expectations, the costings and drawings were signed off and the upgrade and repairs could begin.

On budget and on time

Construction lasted six weeks. Thorough planning by Lia and her Refresh Wellington team, including feasibility studies and detailed plans, meant there were no surprises as each task was tackled and completed. Builders, plumbers, electricians, plasterers, painters, roofers, and tilers were all involved and the entire renovation went extremely smoothly – to stunning effect.

Simple yet superb bathroom renovation results

All the careful work in the early stages paid off handsomely, as the finished outcome is simple yet striking.

The bathroom renovation has created a gorgeous, light space, one that is a pleasure to use. The layout was completely changed to make the most of the 6m2 footprint. A double-doored shower was installed, with ample shelf storage and handheld showerhead providing Helen with safe manoeuvrability. The robin’s egg blue walls have a calming effect, while the turquoise subway tiles make the backsplash pop and add a bit of fun to the space. The repainted ceiling increases a sense of height, and the new skylight bathes the room in natural light.

New paint, carpet, and joinery has enhanced the comfort and ambience of the renovated bedrooms, while warm soft tones chosen for the walls have brought a cosy feel to each space.

Crucially, all the rot has been removed and the roof is watertight, providing Helen and her husband with security against the elements.
