Chris Bath - Renovation Specialist

Role: Renovation Specialist
Region: Wellington
Manager: Mark Morrison

I love taking tired unpractical spaces and giving them a new life, I renovated my own home and understand the pain of “doing it yourself”, even when you have the contacts and skills to do so.

I have a love of timber and trained as a cabinet maker in the UK before emigrating to New Zealand and becoming a BCITO trained kiwi builder. I enjoyed learning the process and the intricacy of organising and building a project from the ground up.

From there I decided to diversify my career and move into a completely different industry working for a company that aesthetically repaired concrete and bricks. From matching bricks on extensions (where the old bricks are no longer manufactured), to crack repair on the Canterbury University to purpose colouring entire buildings like Q Theatre in Auckland or Te Whare Wānanga o Awanuiārangi, the Maori University in Whakatane. I worked my way up from being on the tools to managing the North Island over 5 years.

Time for a new challenge, it felt like the right time to shift back into the renovation and construction industry into a management role, I became the construction manager at a large renovation company in Auckland. I oversaw over 30 renovations at one time with a team of 3 project managers and 30 builders. It was here where I learnt first-hand the dangers of working on a cost-plus contract.  This way of doing renovations, where the builder "won" every time and the homeowner "lost" left me deflated, I was going to leave the industry altogether, as I felt there wasn’t an honest way of doing renovations. I then came across Refresh and their process which involves due diligence before you sign a build contract that sees accountability taken. I am happy to work for a company with integrity.

I married the love of my life in 2015, Hayley is “The Hits” 9-3, daytime announcer. We relocated to Wellington for her job in 2017 and love the culture and vibrancy of Wellington.
In my off time I enjoy time with my wife, having a coffee (Mocha.... I know!) and a mooch down the beach, or in town. Movies and dinner with a vino. If I can dream I would enjoy making bespoke pieces of furniture in a future workshop.

I also enjoy getting stuck into my favourite hobbies such as the gym, cycling, squash, snowboarding and surfing.
